The Jubilation of Republic Day

The 96th year of the foundation of the Turkish Republic is being celebrated all over the country with jubilation. After the victory of the War of Independence led by Veteran Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and his comrades a new form of state administration was established. At the historical session of the Turkish Grand National Assembly on October 20, 1923, the resolution was passed for a change in the constitution, and the Turkish state declared the country a republic. In the same session, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was elected as the first president of the Turkish Republic.
Republic Day, October 29, is celebrated all across the country and especially in the larger cities with organizations by government departments and NGOs and the attendance of Turkish citizens of all ages. Celebrations in Ankara begin with state officials and citizens visiting Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Ataturk. Celebrations after dark in cities including Istanbul’s Vatan Street and Izmir’s Republic Square become even more colorful with the torchlight procession. We commemorate Republic Day, the symbol of the independence of the Turkish nation, and share the joy and enthusiasm of our people.
