Turkey went through a critical turning point on the night of July 15th. We are still seeing the effects and consequences of this attempt. This process revealed many things to us. Firstly, The Republic of Turkey, which has been a symbol of stability with its strengthening democracy and increasing influence in the region and the world, remains firm and steady. Secondly, our people, who defeated this vile attempt that was aiming to undermine our will, our parliament and selected representatives, rallied upon our President H.E. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s call and underlined the fact that democracy is the best way of administration for Turkey. Moreover, the resulting atmosphere of national solidarity and unity, as well as the rekindled patriotic feelings, reinforced our high hopes for a better future. This victory will go down in history as a shining example of people embracing democracy and will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration for other peoples of the world. In order to commemorate this historic day, we decided to change the name of our CIP Passenger Lounge at İstanbul Atatürk Airport to “July 15th Heroes of Democracy Lounge.”
As the Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee of the flag-carrying airline of Turkey, I would like to thank our government officials, our heroic people, and our devoted personnel – from apron workers to cabin crews – who enabled us to continue our operations in a matter of hours following the attempt. I wish mercy from Almighty Allah for our noble martyrs.
I am extending my thanks to the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Transport, Maritime and Communications, TAV Airports, the State Airports Authority, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, our sub-brands and partners, especially Turkish Ground Services (TGS), Turkish Opet, and Turkish Do&Co for their contributions to our world-renowned brand’s fast resuming of operations.
As Turkey continues to take firm and fast steps towards its goals following the defeat of this vile attempt, I would also like to thank Boeing, Airbus, Aercap, CFM International, Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, Honeywell, Rolls-Royce, Rockwell Collins, Recaro, Panasonic, Thales and all our partners as well as to IATA, ICAO and Star Alliance, international organizations that we are a member of, for their support to our country and brand. I hope that our collaboration with our business partners will strengthen further in the future.
Our efforts to offer you the best flight experience and service quality, even in adverse conditions, were once again recognized. We have been awarded the “Best Airline in Europe” by Skytrax for the sixth consecutive year, thanks to the votes of 20 million people. In addition to being the Best of Europe, Turkish Airlines has received three other prestigious awards in 2016 World Airline Awards by Skytrax, which include the “Best Business Class Dining Lounge”, “Best Business Class On-Board Catering” and “Best Airline in Southern Europe”, for all of which we are grateful to our passengers.
Currently flying to 290 destinations in 116 countries and carrying the title of “the airline that flies to most countries and international destinations worldwide”, Turkish Airlines is emboldened by these successes that derive from your satisfaction and is taking firmer steps to become the world’s best.
As our country and airline have emerged stronger from the recent ordeal, I wanted to address you personally in this issue. Despite the hard times we had to face, our belief in our country, people and future, gains strength from our unity and solidarity. Together and united as one, our entire country works toward further improving economic stability and confidence while continuing to build its future with great enthusiasm.
I hereby would like to celebrate our Victory Day on August 30th, a day that symbolizes our War of Independence, the basis of our unity and people’s will, while commemorating all our martyrs and veterans, the martyrs of democracy of July 15th in particular, with compassion and gratitude.
M. İlker Aycı
