The world’s sixth most-visited city with around 12 million tourists a year, Istanbul has linked three continents throughout history to become a center of art, culture, trade and life in general. According to finds unearthed during the Marmaray excavations, the city’s history goes back more than 8,500 years. And the legacy of this broad time slice lies cheek by jowl with the city’s modern life in its museums and places of worship such as the Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Süleymaniye as well as in its historic commercial districts like the Grand Bazaar. People of diverse religious beliefs and ethnic identities have lived for centuries and continue to live here today in peace as “Istanbulites”.
